I was in college, had a kid on the way, and a soon-to-be wife. Young to be starting a family, young to be thinking about any of this. But I had this pull in the back of my head that I wanted to build something. Not in a vague hustle-culture way. Just a real, quiet certainty that I needed to get in the game.

So I opened an E-Trade account and stared at it for a while.

I didn’t know what I was doing. What I did know was that I didn’t want to put money into things I’d never heard of. My uncles loved penny stocks and biotechs, names nobody outside of a pump-and-dump chat room could pronounce. That didn’t feel like investing to me. It felt like gambling with extra steps.

So I bought one share of Apple. Split-adjusted, somewhere around $320.

One share.

That’s all $400 got me, after fees and the pocket change I didn’t want to touch.

Subscribe now

A few weeks later I’m at a barbecue and my uncle asks what I’m holding. I tell him. Apple. One share. He looks at me like I’d just told him I buried the money in the yard.

“Apple? You can only get one share of Apple. Look at this thing I’m in, it’s $3 a share, you could own a hundred of these. Same money.”

He pitched me some biotech working on a cure for something. They were always curing something. I nodded, said okay, and over the next year I drifted toward his side of the map. Started nibbling on penny stocks. Some pink sheet names. A few of them are still sitting in an old account at $0.03 a share, frozen forever like insects in amber.

Then I got the job at William O’Neil.

If you don’t know the name, O’Neil wrote How To Make Money in Stocks and built the methodology behind IBD and MarketSmith. I worked there in sales and coaching, walking financial advisors through the software. Part of the deal was you had to read the book, study the system, and pass a test. Once you passed, they gave you a company trading account to trade real money alongside your personal one.

I remember compliance asking for my personal account details. I had about forty bucks in it. I was embarrassed handing that over. Forty dollars, from a guy who was supposed to coach advisors on how to pick winning stocks.

But reading the book was the part that rewired me.

Because what O’Neil spent chapter after chapter explaining, with data, with examples, with decades of receipts, was the exact opposite of what my uncle told me at that barbecue. The biggest winning stocks of all time didn’t start cheap. They started expensive, by retail logic, and kept going up. High priced stocks are priced high for a reason. They’re the best merchandise on the shelf. The institutions, the funds that actually move markets, prefer them. They want the liquidity. They want the quality. They don’t scroll the sub-$5 bargain bin looking for a deal.

Here’s the part I wish someone had carved into my brain at 20.

A 10% move on a $100 stock is the same as a 10% move on a $10 stock. You don’t get paid on share count. You get paid on the percentage move.

Read that line again if you need to. It’s the single most expensive thing to not understand as a beginner, and it cost me years.

Every time my uncle said “you could own a hundred of these instead of one of those,” he was selling me on a feeling. The feeling of owning more. Of doing more. Of participating more. But the math doesn’t care how many shares you have. The math cares whether the stock actually goes up.

Apple, the one I bought for $320 and felt sheepish about, did what high-quality merchandise does. It kept going. If I’d just held it and added nothing, ignored every barbecue conversation, I’d be sitting on generational money today. I’m not. I did what most young investors do. I got talked out of the good trade and into the bad ones.

So here’s the practical takeaway if you’re sitting with your first $400, or $4,000, or $40,000.

Don’t buy anything under $20 a share.

That’s it. That one filter alone will remove an enormous amount of garbage from your field of vision. It will keep you out of most of the pink sheet lottery tickets, the pre-revenue biotechs promising miracles, the shell companies, the story stocks with no earnings. It’s not a perfect filter. There’s more to a good investment than price. But as a single cut, it punches way above its weight.

You’ll miss some great trades by doing this. You will also miss almost all of the worst ones.

There are reasons institutions don’t fish in the cheap end of the pond. You shouldn’t fish there either, especially not when you’re starting out and every dollar matters.

My uncle meant well. Most uncles do. And honestly, it was one of the more impressive stretches I can remember. Not just because of the move itself, but because of how it moved. Consistent. Methodical. The kind of action that tells you real money was doing the buying.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

Leaders were already in motion before the follow-through day. If you were watching closely, the real move in the best names started before April 7th. What last week looked like, particularly in the high-quality names, was more consolidation than continuation. High tight flags, short stroke patterns, ten-day surfing. Leaders digesting their gains while the rest of the market caught up. That’s a healthy dynamic. That’s what you want to see.

I’m writing this Sunday with Iran news hitting and Dow futures down roughly 400 points. So yeah, the pullback everyone’s been talking about might be showing up Monday morning.

I wouldn’t be surprised either way. We open lower and close strong, or we just come in clean. The more relevant question for me isn’t what the index does on Monday. It’s what the leaders do. That’s always the question.

A pullback to the 7,000 area on the S&P would be completely normal. Even a 50% retracement of the recent move is workable in the context of a broader uptrend. I say this not to minimize what’s coming, but to be clear about what I’m watching for: I want to see the leaders hold up better than the indexes. That’s the whole point of trading individual stocks instead of just buying the ETF. On the way up, leaders outperform. On the way down, they hold better. That’s the deal.

One more thing before we get into the book: we’re in a full-on uptrend, but this isn’t the tape to be aggressive adding new positions. For anything I initiate from scratch, I’m starting at half size. The move has been too straight up. Half position first, then I let the stock prove itself before going full.

speculation office in the early 1900s. Traders buzzing around, swapping tips, bragging about three-point gains, agonizing over the ones that got away. Standard stuff. But sitting in the corner was an old man named Partridge. The other traders called him Old Turkey behind his back because of the way he walked.

This Substack is reader-supported. He never asked for tips. Never volunteered advice. Never bragged about his wins. He just sat there, listening to everyone with this calm, fatherly patience. And when someone would come to him all worked up, asking what he thought about a stock or what he should do next, Old Turkey would cock his head to one side, smile, and say the same thing every single time.

“Well, you know, it’s a bull market.”

That was it. That was the whole answer.

One day, a guy named Elmer Harwood rushed over to tell Old Turkey to sell a stock that had already made him seven points. Take the profit, buy it back cheaper on the pullback. Smart, right? Logical. And Old Turkey just shook his head and said something that stuck with Jesse Livermore for the rest of his life. He said: “If I sold that stock now, I’d lose my position. And when you are as old as I am, you’ll know that to lose your position is something nobody can afford.”

He wasn’t being stubborn. He wasn’t being lazy. He was telling everyone in that room the only thing that actually mattered. The big money is not in the daily fluctuations. It’s in the main movement. And the main movement was up.

Most people don’t even notice when the conditions change.

That’s the part that gets me. Right now, as I write this, the market has confirmed a new uptrend. Stocks are ripping. NBIS went from around $75 to over $160 in about two weeks. Leaders are emerging everywhere. And most people I know have no idea.

They’re at work. They’re picking up their kids. They’re scrolling past a CNBC headline about tariffs or interest rates and moving on with their day. Their 401k sits in some target-date fund their company picked for them and they haven’t logged in since they onboarded.

And look, I get it. Life is busy. Nobody expects you to become a full-time trader. But here’s what I wish more people understood: you don’t need to learn everything about the market. You just need to learn when the market is with you and when it isn’t. That one piece of awareness, by itself, would change most people’s financial outcomes permanently.

When I talk to friends and family who aren’t in the market, I keep it dead simple. I tell them about the 200-day moving average. Paul Tudor Jones, one of the greatest macro traders to ever do it, said his metric for everything he looked at was the 200-day moving average of closing prices. His reasoning was straightforward: if a stock or an index is above it, the trend is your friend. If it’s below it, you play defense.

That’s a traffic light. Green means go. Red means stop. You don’t need a Bloomberg terminal to see it. TradingView is free. Pull up the S&P 500. Add the 200-day line. If price is above it, lean in. If it’s below, lean out. That alone puts you ahead of 90% of people who are just guessing.

When the market gives you the signal, you press.

This is the part where Old Turkey’s wisdom really hits. In a bull market, the worst thing you can be is trigger-shy. When the trend is confirmed and leaders are setting up everywhere, that is the time to be aggressive. Not reckless. Aggressive. There’s a difference. Aggressive means you are deploying capital into your best ideas with conviction, following your system, and letting your winners run.

You don’t have to be first. You don’t have to be right on every trade. You just have to be in tune with the strong times and feed them.

And then when the market starts to misbehave, when your leaders start breaking down on volume, when the index slips below those moving averages, you pull back. Incrementally. Methodically. Not in panic, not all at once. You reduce exposure the same way you built it. With discipline.

Here’s where it gets dangerous.

Bull markets feel amazing. And that feeling is the trap.

When everything is working, you start to believe you can’t miss. Every setup looks good. Every breakout seems obvious. You’re seeing names double in two weeks and it feels like the whole market is on easy mode.

But that confidence, if you let it follow you into the next phase, will eat you alive. The habits you build in a raging bull market can become the exact behaviors that destroy you in a choppy or bearish one. Chasing breakouts that fail. Holding through pullbacks that become corrections. Ignoring your stops because “it always comes back.”

It doesn’t always come back.

The discipline is this: trade the market you’re in. Not the one you were in last week. Not the one you want to be in. The one that’s happening right now, today.

When conditions are strong, be Old Turkey. Sit tight. Let the trend do the work. When conditions shift, respect it. Don’t bring your bull market habits to a bear market fight.

This is what I’m here for.

I’m not writing this as someone who has it all figured out. I made mistakes this week. I broke my own rules. I chased a name that wasn’t part of my plan, and I shook out of a trade I should have held because I got impatient. That’s the reality of doing this in real time.

But I keep showing up because I believe in the system. CAN SLIM works. Rules work. And the more people who understand that, the more people who stop treating the market like a casino and start treating it like the wealth-building tool it actually is, the better off we all are.

If you take nothing else from this, take this: pay attention to the trend. Learn what a 200-day moving average looks like. Know when the market is with you. And when it is, don’t be afraid to act.

It’s a bull market, you know.

If this kind of thinking resonates with you, subscribe and follow along. I’m documenting this whole journey, the wins and the losses, in real time. And if you ever want to talk markets, reach out. I could talk about this stuff forever.

This Substack is reader-supported. A mentor told me that years ago: the big money gets made when everyone is looking one way and the charts are moving the other. That’s been the setup for the last ten days. Negative sentiment, resilient action. The market has gapped above all three major moving averages: the 21, the 50, and the 200. That’s not noise. That’s strength.

We’ve been close for 16 years now, and he knows sports the way I know charts. Inside and out.

One Sunday I asked him if he was betting the Giants.

He looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

“I never bet my team.”

I asked him why. He’s one of the sharpest guys I know when it comes to finding an edge. If anyone could be objective about a Giants game, it would be him.

“That’s the thing,” he said. “I can’t be objective. I care too much. I’m a fan first. And fans make terrible bets.”

That conversation has stuck with me for years. Not because of football. Because of markets.

Right now the political temperature in this country is as high as we’ve ever seen it. Both sides have picked their team. Both sides are fans first.

And fans make terrible traders.

The mark of a good trader is the distance between emotion and execution. It’s the ability to look at a chart, look at the data, and make a decision based on what the market is telling you, not what you want it to say. Not what your timeline is screaming. Not what your coworkers said at lunch.

The system doesn’t care who’s president. The system doesn’t care about your politics. The system reads price and volume, and price and volume don’t have a party affiliation.

So here’s what the system is telling us right now:

Last night, April 7th, the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply and has been effectively closed since late February, is set to reopen under Iranian military coordination. Pakistan brokered the deal. Negotiations move to Islamabad on Friday.

The market reaction was immediate. S&P futures jumped over 2%. Oil dropped from $117 to under $95 a barrel. The Nikkei surged nearly 5% overnight. The Russell popped almost 3%.

Is this the end of the conflict? No one knows. Two weeks is two weeks. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council is already calling it a “victory” while the U.S. frames it as a stepping stone. Both sides are telling different stories about the same deal. Sound familiar?

But here’s what matters for us:

Today, April 8th, we’re looking at a potential follow-through day.

For anyone new to the term, a follow-through day is one of the core signals in William O’Neil’s system for confirming that a market rally is real and not just a dead cat bounce. The rule is simple: at least four days off the bottom, then a strong up day on volume heavier than the session before. It tells you institutions are putting real money to work. We want to ride that wave.

We’re on day six of the current rally attempt. The strongest follow-through days historically come between day four and day seven. We’re right in the window.

Now, a follow-through day doesn’t mean the correction is over for good. Not every one works. But it is a signal, and it’s the signal this system uses to start building positions. O’Neil’s rule was simple: buy something. You don’t have to go all in. You don’t have to be a hero. But you initiate. You get skin in the game and let the market tell you whether to add or pull back.

A word on position sizing: It feels great to be heavy when the market is running. But being oversized is what kills you when things get choppy. If you’re maxed out, you have no room to give stocks space to breathe. You panic at the first shake. You sell what you should hold and hold what you should sell.

Start smaller than feels right. Add when the market rewards you. That’s how the best traders scale in. They earn their position size.

The bigger point is this: Whatever is happening in Iran, whatever is happening in Washington, whatever your timeline is telling you to feel about it, your job as a trader is to read the tape. Not the headline.

In business, there is no religion and there is no politics. There is what is working and what is not. Treat your trading the same way. Leave the jersey at the door.

The market doesn’t know your team. And it doesn’t care. The sooner you’re okay with that, the sooner you start making better decisions.

Ghost Alpha is a CAN SLIM practitioner documenting his trading journey in real time. Do your own research, size your risk appropriately, and never trade money you can't afford to lose.

Right now, 80% of my account is sitting in cash.

That’s not panic. That’s the system working exactly as it’s supposed to.

We’re in a correction. The S&P is under pressure, the indexes are broken, and until we get a confirmed follow-through day, there’s no reason to be a hero. One thing I learned from studying O’Neil: you don’t have to be in the market all the time. Sometimes the best trade is no trade.

For anyone who hasn’t heard the term before, a follow-through day is how we know a rally attempt is the real thing versus a head fake. The rule is simple: wait at least four days off the bottom, then look for a big up day on heavier volume than the day before. That kind of price and volume action tells you institutions are putting serious money to work. Without it, you’re guessing.

Thursday was day three off the bottom. The market was closed Friday. That makes Monday day four, which means we could get a legitimate follow-through day right when the week opens. Historically the strongest ones come between day four and day seven, so we have a real window here.

In the meantime, here’s what I’m watching. These are the four setups I’ll be ready to move on if the market confirms.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" clearing the 25% threshold we look for. Sales growth was lighter at 19%, which is softer than ideal. We want to see 25%+ on both sides, and the best merchandise usually delivers 50%+. So the fundamentals here are a pass, not a conviction call, but they’re good enough to stay on the list given everything else happening with the company.

The story is genuinely interesting. Netflix just acquired InterPositive, an AI filmmaking tools company co-founded by Ben Affleck, for up to $600 million. The technology helps filmmakers work more efficiently in post-production, continuity fixes, scene enhancement, that kind of thing, and it won’t be commercialized externally. They’re building this in-house. At the same time, they just raised prices across all U.S. plans for the second time in less than two years, projecting ad revenue to roughly double in 2026 and targeting $20 billion in content spend. The company has pricing power. Not many businesses can say that right now.

Technicals

The chart had a rough stretch. After a strong run through the first half of 2025, it sold off hard, broke the 50-day, broke the 200-day, and spent months under both. Normally that’s a disqualifier. But look at what happened off the bottom.

It found support around $75, bounced hard to $100, and has been consolidating tightly in that range ever since. What’s forming looks like the right side of a cup. It could tighten into a handle from here, which would actually be preferred. Lower volume, some shakeout of the weak hands, then a clean breakout. There’s overhead supply to work through, but this stock has had plenty of time to digest it, and the volume on that $75 to $100 run was unusual in the best way.

Game Plan

Watching for a handle to form on lighter volume. Pivot point is around $98. A strong move through $100 on big volume works too. If I’m in and it breaks the 21-day moving average, I’m reducing. Hard stop at 5-8% below entry, no exceptions.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" story on the list.

Last quarter: 404% earnings growth, 61% sales growth. Those are the kinds of numbers that make you stop scrolling. The caveat is that it’s somewhat of a turnaround story. The prior quarters weren’t stringing together the kind of consecutive acceleration we’d ideally like to see. One monster quarter is a signal. Three in a row is a trend. We’re watching to see which one this turns out to be.

The story is the NAND memory cycle turning. Companies like SanDisk and Micron operate in a cyclical industry where pricing and demand swing hard in both directions. When the cycle turns up, and the data suggests it has, these stocks can move faster than almost anything else in the market. Storage demand tied to AI infrastructure is a real tailwind. This isn’t a company inventing a story. The demand is there.

Technicals

The chart is one of the most constructive on my list. After nearly tripling from the $284 area to almost $800, the stock has been digesting that run in what looks like a bullish flag. There’s also an argument for a double bottom if you look at it from a different angle. Either way, the structure is tight and orderly, the kind of price action that tells you institutions are holding, not distributing.

The RS line is strong, outperforming the S&P even while the broader market is in a correction. That’s leadership. When the market turns, stocks with RS lines like this tend to move first.

There was a failed breakout attempt at the $725 level on the first flag run. That matters. Now the stock has undercut that pivot, which can shake out the weak holders and reset the base. A second attempt through $725 on strong volume would be a compelling entry.

Game Plan

I wouldn’t wait for absolute new highs on this one. I’d start building a position as it approaches that $725 resistance on strong volume, then add if it breaks through to new highs. Moving averages are the guide for stops. If it breaks below with force, that’s the exit. 5-8% hard stop in place from the start.

<a class="image-link image2 It’s a $100+ billion revenue company that has quietly become one of the most important AI infrastructure plays in the market.

Last quarter delivered 45% EPS growth and 39% revenue growth. That’s not a blip. It’s part of a multi-quarter trend. For all of fiscal 2026, Dell posted record revenue of $113.5 billion, record EPS, and record cash generation. Their AI-optimized server business grew over 300% year over year. They’re guiding for $50 billion in AI server revenue in fiscal 2027, roughly double what they just did. They have a $43 billion backlog going into this year. That’s not a company hoping AI demand materializes. That’s a company with the orders already on the books.

The story is founder-led stability meets the AI infrastructure supercycle. Michael Dell built this company in a dorm room. He’s been running it through every cycle since. That matters.

Technicals

The chart shows a long base, really from mid-2024 through now. A big gap-down in June 2024 started the consolidation, and the stock spent the better part of a year working through it. Choppy, frustrating action for anyone who was in it. But that kind of time in a base is actually constructive. It shakes out the impatient holders and resets the supply-demand picture.

Now it’s approaching the prior highs around $179.70. The left side of the base around $166 to $168 has already been cleared. The real question is whether it can push through those all-time highs and hold. I’d call the current setup a cup with handle in spirit. Not perfectly formed, but the structure is there.

One thing I’ll note: it’s a bit extended from its moving averages right now. Personally I prefer setups where the stock is basing near its 50-day. It gives me a cleaner stop and double confirmation when things go wrong. That said, this one is finding good support at the 21-day, so that’s the level to watch.

For the longer-term reader, this is also the kind of stock that works well alongside an index as a core holding. Big, liquid, growing. If markets stabilize, DELL is the type of name that benefits broadly.

Game Plan

Any clean break through $179.70 on strong volume is the entry. I’d be comfortable building a position in the current range too, given the cleared left-side resistance. 21-day moving average is the guide. Hard stop 5-8% below entry.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" story, and that’s what makes it interesting.

International Seaways is a tanker company. It moves crude oil around the world on a fleet of roughly 70 vessels. Not a flashy business. But energy transportation is one of the strongest industry groups in the market right now, and that matters just as much as the company-specific story.

Last quarter delivered 172% earnings growth and 38% sales growth. Big numbers, and they came in ahead of what analysts expected. The honest caveat is that this is a cyclical, and tanker rates can swing hard. The prior history of fundamentals isn’t what you’d see in a software company with 10 years of consistent growth. That’s a real con against this setup. But when the cycle is moving in your direction and the chart confirms it, you work with what the market is giving you.

The story is geopolitics driving oil demand. Ongoing tensions in key shipping regions have kept tanker rates elevated. INSW sold five older vessels recently for roughly $185 million and is modernizing its fleet. They paid out a $2.15 per share combined dividend. The company is running well.

Technicals

The RS line is the best one on this entire watchlist. If relative strength is the measure of leadership, INSW is leading. The stock ran hard from April 2025 into recent months, found resistance around $78.51, and has been consolidating sideways since. It’s not a textbook cup. The consolidation is a little wide and choppy for that. Call it a sideways base. Not perfect, but functional.

What I like is the tightness of that consolidation relative to how far the stock ran. It digested a big move without giving much of it back. That’s strength.

Game Plan

The $77.70 area is where I’d start looking to build a position on any market confirmation. New highs above $78.51 is the cleaner breakout entry. RS line is the primary reason this is on the list. That kind of outperformance tends to persist when market conditions improve. 5-8% stop below entry, moving averages as secondary guide.

None of these are trades yet. They’re setups. Stocks that have done the work to be ready when the market gives us the green light.

The follow-through day is the gate. Until we get one, we wait. This is the part of the process most people can’t stomach, which is exactly why most people don’t make money in markets.

The discipline to sit in cash while good setups form in front of you is a skill. It took me years to develop it. But the setups that work best are the ones where you let the stock come to you, not the ones where you chase.

Stay patient. Faster than most people were ready to admit even a year ago. White collar work is being restructured in real time. If you’ve spent 15, 20, 25 years building a career, developing skills, and quietly stacking a nest egg for the back half of your life, this moment probably feels unsettling.

You’re not ready to retire. But your industry is shifting under your feet.

Here’s the thing nobody’s saying out loud: that uncertainty is exactly why right now is the best time to get serious about investing.

Markets Will Outlast Whatever Comes Next

No one knows how fast AI rewrites the economy. Maybe five years. Maybe ten. Probably faster than the optimists are telling you. But here’s the one constant: as long as there’s an economy, there are markets. Business happens. Transactions happen. Trade happens. Financial markets have survived every technological disruption in history and they’ll survive this one too.

That’s a rare pocket of certainty in an uncertain time. Use it.

It Doesn’t Matter What You Invest In. It Matters That You Start.

I spent years at William O’Neil talking to people about investing. The most common reason people didn’t start? They didn’t know where to start. What books to read. What style to use. Index funds or growth stocks or something else entirely.

My answer then is the same as it is now: just buy something.

I told my little brother the same thing when I helped him get started recently. You are going to make mistakes. That’s not a warning, that’s the curriculum. You can read every book, study every chart, and still not understand the market until you have skin in the game. The market is a feel. You develop that feel by being in it.

So whether it’s index funds, growth stocks, or yes, I’ll say it, even crypto, if it interests you and gets you started: do it.

Wall Street Wants You to Think This Is Beyond You. It’s Not.

The financial industry has spent decades positioning itself as a necessary gatekeeper. The message has always been: this is complicated, you need us.

But most fund managers aren’t beating the market. Most aren’t generating alpha. And if you’re simply buying indexes and compounding over time, being less aggressive during downtrends and more aggressive during uptrends, you’re going to outperform the majority of professionally managed money without paying anyone a fee to do it.

The mystique is manufactured. Don’t buy it.

AI Just Handed You the Tools to Do This Yourself

Here’s the flip side of the AI story that nobody’s talking about: the same technology disrupting your career is also democratizing investing in ways that weren’t possible five years ago.

Tools that used to require a Bloomberg terminal and a quant team? You can build them now. You can code your own screeners. Run your own analysis. Build your own systems. The barrier has never been lower.

So yes, AI might be reshaping the job market. But it’s also handing retail investors more capability than they’ve ever had.

The Window Is Open. Use It.

Whether you have $100 saved or $100,000, the principle is the same: people rarely get wealthy from their paycheck. They get wealthy from what they do with their money.

The uncertainty you’re feeling right now? Channel it. The best investors aren’t the ones who waited until everything was certain. They’re the ones who got in, made some mistakes, paid their tuition, and stayed consistent.

There’s never been a better time to start. Or to start again.

If this resonated, subscribe for more. I write about trading, market dynamics, and the intersection of technology and personal finance from the perspective of someone who’s been in the markets for a long time and is figuring out this new era right alongside you.
